POWER OUTAGE IN BEKWARRA LGA OF CROSS RIVER STATE

Still on the continuous Bekwarra LGA power problems, while some call it power outage, power cut or power out, others call it power blackout, power failure or a blackout.

Whatever name one may use to describe it, the perpetual loss of electrical power network supply to end users in Bekwarra local government area of Northern Cross River for over a period of five years and still counting is to say the least appalling, ridiculous and most unfortunate.

Bekwarra is a Local Government Area in northern Cross River State, Nigeria. Its headquarter is in the town of Abuochiche (or Abuo Chiche) on the A4 highway. Other towns in the LGA are Abuagbor-Iye, Nyanya-Ulim, Nyanya-Idigwe, Gakem, Itekpa, Ugboro, Ibiragidi, Utukwe, Afrike and Ukpah, ijibor, Beten, Ugboro, Anyikang, Ebegang, Utukpuru, Ebewo, and others.

It has an area of about 306 square kilometres (118 sq mi), and had a population of 105,822 according to the 2006 census.

Against the background of the seemingly intractable power supply problem facing the entire LGA, it is behoves on the elders, community and political leaders as well as other stakeholders to do something urgently about the wobbling electricity supply situation in the LGA.

Recently, we heard a committee was set up at the instance of Rt Hon Legor Idagbor, member representing Bekwarra/Obudu/Obanliku federal constituency to find a lasting solution to the lack of power supply to Bekwarra. As we speak, nothing much has been heard about their activities. All efforts to reach those appointed into the committee for update has been abortive.

Now that all National Assembly members in the state has shut down Obudu for the burial of the Late Mother of the Minister of Power , State, Prince GODDY Jedy-Agba, I want to make a humble plea to Rt Hon Legor Idagbo to take advantage of his condolence visit to look into the perennial power outage facing Bekwarra LGA for years now.

The last time I wrote about Bekwarra , some indigenes of the local government area came out in their droves online in a futile attempt to vilify and condemn me. Their reason is that I am from Yala LGA and should not delve into Bekwarra affairs. What a cheap excuse. What some of them failed to know is that my paternal grandmother is from Akpa-Akpa village in Bekwarra LGA. The present Chief of the community, HRH, Adah Solomon Ogar Ogbor, my name sake is my father’s immediate younger brother. Also, I am married to a beautiful Bekwarra woman from Ubepa near Abuochiche. So whatever concerns Bekwarra concerns me directly.

I don’t want to attempt to mention names of notable and illustrious sons and daughters of Bekwarra LGA ; both in government and in the private sector who can single handedly fix the terrible power blackout facing the entire LGA. My reason is simple. They are just too numerous for this piece to contain.

I hope my message is not misconstrued as I pray it gets to the right and appropriate quarters for immediate attention.
